The La Junta Fire Department was originally organized as the John Fisher Hose Company in 1883 and better known as the La Junta Volunteer Fire Department.
In 1953, the La Junta Rural Fire Protection District was formed and works with the City of La Junta to help provide apparatus and staffing to provide 24/7 coverage of Fire and EMS services in the district.
The La Junta Fire Department covers approx. 350 square miles within the La Junta Rural Fire Protection District. Areas include the City of La Junta, Town of Swink and we provide EMS services and auto aide fire response to the Town of Cheraw. The fire department also covers the surrounding areas of those towns listed.
The Fire Department is responsible for fire protection, code enforcement and prevention and “All Hazards” disaster preparedness within the City of La Junta Rural fire/emergency medical services (EMS) dispatch operations, and emergency paramedic service.
Additionally, the Fire Department oversees the development and enforcement of the fire code, occupancy requirements, fire prevention ordinances, and building construction fire code compliance, including investigation of the causes and circumstances of fires.
