Engineering

The Engineering Department consists of three full-time staff members: The Director of Engineering, the Building Official, and the Office Manager. This department manages building code compliance permitting and reviews, GIS mapping, street layout and additions, engineering new City projects as well as the maintenance and repair of existing infrastructure. The staff also manages all planning, zoning, and variances for the City.

The department is responsible for the management of construction projects often funded through grants. Recent projects under the supervision of the Engineering Department are the Brick & Tile Park and the La Junta Arroyo Trail.

Permitting is a large part of what the Engineering Department is responsible for. A building permit is required when an owner or owner’s authorized agent who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by the International Building, Electrical, Gas, Mechanical and Plumbing codes, or to cause any such work to be performed, shall first make application to obtain the requested permit.
